Your files are encrypted before they leave your device and stay that way at rest. Only your browser, unlocked by your passphrase, can open them again.

Frequently asked questions

Who can read the files in my Vault?

Only you. Each file is encrypted in your browser with a key created on your device and protected by your passphrase. Justee stores only the encrypted version and never holds your key, so we cannot open your stored documents. If we were ever compelled by subpoena, we could provide only unreadable encrypted data. Even making a document editable happens in your browser, so an unencrypted copy of a Vault file is never sent to our servers.

Is the Vault end-to-end encrypted?

Not in the strict sense, and we do not call it end-to-end because that would stretch the term. Your files are sealed in your browser with a key only you hold, and their contents never reach our servers, not even to convert them for editing. What holds us back from the label is that the encryption runs in code your browser loads from us, so you are trusting that code and your device, which the strictest privacy designs are built to remove. That is why we call it zero-access encryption instead: we store only the encrypted version and hold no key to open it. One note: if you send a Vault file into a review or comparison, it is unsealed in your browser for that task, and we tell you before that happens.

The Vault is included on paid plans, and higher plans get more room. Legal documents are typically small, so even the starting tier holds thousands of files. You can see how much space you have used at any time from your Vault.

What happens if I lose my passphrase?

Because only you hold your key, keep your passphrase and recovery code safe. If you lose both, your Vault files cannot be recovered by anyone, including Justee. This is the trade-off that makes the Vault genuinely private, so we set you up with a recovery code when you create your key.
