License metrics set how usage is measured and charged. Named user licenses are assigned to specific people (for example, 50 named users) and suit fixed teams. Concurrent user licenses cap simultaneous sessions regardless of total users (20 concurrent licenses can serve a larger group that never logs in all at once), which suits shared or shift-based access. Site licenses permit unlimited users at a location or across an organization and usually cost more upfront. Picking the metric that matches how you actually use the software helps control cost and avoid compliance problems.

Common restrictions that may affect your business: internal use only (no commercial use with clients), geographic limits on deployment, bans on sublicensing or contractor use, limits on service bureau or managed services use, limits on cloud deployment or virtualization, restrictions on integration with other software, bans on competitive analysis or benchmarking, and restrictions on modifying or reverse engineering. Check that the restrictions fit your business model and intended use. Some can be negotiated.

It depends. Some vendors include maintenance in the license fee, while others charge separately, often as an annual percentage of the license price. Maintenance usually covers updates and patches, version upgrades, technical support, and bug fixes. Questions to ask: is maintenance mandatory or optional? What support level is included (hours, response times, channels)? Can it be included in the base price? What happens if you stop paying for it (lost upgrade rights or support access)? For enterprise software, buyers often ask to bundle maintenance into the license fee for predictable costs.

Warranties buyers commonly ask for: the software will perform substantially as described in its documentation, it is free from viruses and malware, the vendor has the right to license it, it does not infringe third-party IP rights, and the vendor will maintain stated security and data protection standards. Most vendors disclaim the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, and buyers of critical software sometimes ask to keep them. A warranty that runs for the license term protects more than a short window such as 90 days, and remedies that include fixes, refunds, or damages give more than a promise of efforts to repair.

Practical steps: understand the license metrics and restrictions before deploying, track actual usage against licensed capacity with software asset management, keep records of license purchases, limit deployment to authorized users and devices, check usage regularly to catch over-deployment early, negotiate audit rights that limit frequency and scope, and fix compliance issues before a vendor audit. Many violations come from confusion about restrictions or accidental over-deployment, so knowing the terms up front lowers the risk of a dispute.

Whichever you select. Justee applies U.S. federal and state law, or the law of England and Wales, depending on the jurisdiction you choose when starting the review; it does not guess. Any U.S. state can be selected. English coverage applies to England and Wales only, not Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Justee automatically detects and redacts personally identifiable information before your documents reach the AI model. Protected types include:

  • SWIFT/BIC codes, IBAN numbers, and bank routing numbers
  • Business license numbers and attorney bar IDs
  • Corporate tax identifiers (EIN)
Detection is best-effort and cannot guarantee catching everything: certain rare identifiers (such as cryptocurrency wallet addresses and MAC addresses) may not be detected automatically. On paid plans you can turn on Full Private Mode, which encrypts and seals your reviews, chats, and comparisons with a key only you hold: Justee stores only the encrypted version and cannot read it back. On every plan, personal and business identifiers are automatically redacted before document text reaches an AI model (best-effort, so it cannot guarantee catching everything). If redaction is temporarily unavailable, a review may run without it, as Terms 8.5 explain. Nothing you submit is used to train AI models.
